We caught up with our coworker Madeleine about her and her business Make Like a Bandit. Madeleine is a Freelance illustrator and has been working at Society1 for a few months now. She creates unique pet portraits, prints and stationary by hand. Each one is bespoke and drawn just for you.
Here's what we found out when we delved a bit deeper into the world of Madeleine.....
Society1: When did you start your business and what do you do?
Madeleine: I started Make Like A Bandit in 2017, I was in my first marketing role since I graduated and was so miserable. I started having panic attacks in the office cupboard, I was depressed, anxious, constantly ill and having severe chest pain. After a few months, I decided I couldn’t carry on and I quit my job with nothing else lined up. I found a job advertised for a graphic designer at a local animal charity. To make my CV stand out I decide to draw a few animals and add them into my portfolio. I’d never drawn animals and I was extremely happy with the work I produced. I was sure I’d at least get an interview! I didn’t. But here I am two years later drawing animals, AND making a living from it. Isn’t it funny how life works out like that.
I create a range of prints and cards, but my best selling products are my pet portraits. If you’d have told me two years ago the majority of my income would come from drawing dogs and cats, I would have laughed!
My journey with MLAB has been up and down, lack of confidence and not having a clue what/where to go has seriously slowed me down. BUT now, I’m in a really good place and I finally feel confident about what I’m creating.
Society1: What are you working on at the moment?
Madeleine: I have a scratch map of the world at home and every time I send a portrait or product to a customer in a new country, I scratch off the country! I’m extremely proud to say I’ve now delivered to 13 countries around the world and 11 states in America!
Society1: What’s the big Dream?
Madeleine: At the moment I donate 20% of my profits to a different animal charity every month. My dream is to start my own animal charity, but I have no idea what the aim would be yet. I’m working on it!
Society1: Why did you choose Society1?
Madeleine: I need to be surrounded by creative people. I can’t sit at home and work by myself or otherwise I would never leave the house! I’ve been looking for that community feel, and I’ve found it! I couldn’t be happier working at Society1!
Now to the real you.......
Society1: Are you a hunter or a gatherer?
Madeleine: I think I’m a gatherer! I love shopping for quirky and unique things. My home is a complete mix of styles and I love being surrounded by things that make me smile and bring back memories of family and friends.
Society1: What’s in your packed lunch?
Madeleine: As a strict vegan, you’d think I would be organised with my meals. But no. My cooking skills go as far as beans on toast! If you see me in the Society1 kitchen at lunchtime chances are that’s what I’m making.
Society1: How do you like to relax?
Madeleine: I’ve recently started running and I’m a yoga addict. I’ve struggled with depression for years and both activities really help to clear my head. I’m trying to get into the habit of reading before I go to bed, I find that helps me to unwind!
Society1: If you were to choose a super power, what would you choose?
Madeleine: Can I say world peace?
Society1: Beach holiday / City Break?
Madeleine: City break! I can’t sit still so a beach holiday sounds like a nightmare for me! I love exploring and seeing new places. I recently went to New York and loved the constant ‘go go go’ atmosphere. I would love to move there for a few months!
Society1: Are you a bathroom singer
Madeleine: No, I’m more of a bathroom dancer! Unless Eminem ‘lose yourself’ comes on. That I’ll rap along too!
Society1: If you were an animal what would you be?
Madeleine: I think I would be a shetland pony. Short, stocky and a little weird!
Society1: Who’s your inspiration?
Madeleine: My biggest inspiration is Shepherd Fairey, the found of OBEY. I love his work and I’m very proud to say I have an original piece by him at home! It’s by far my favourite thing I own!
Society1: If you want to treat yourself, what do you do / have / buy?
Madeleine: If you would of asked me a couple of years ago, it would have been shopping! But now it’s the simple things like going for a walk on the beach or reading a book. I’m trying to become less materialistic and taking time for the little things.
Society1: You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What colour would you be and why?
Madeleine: I think I would be navy, I have no idea why. But it’s my favourite colour!
