We caught up with our member Paul Madden about him and his business, he is awesome so lets take a look at what he has been up to.
Here's what we found out when we delved a bit deeper into the world of Paul Madden.....
Society1: When did you start your business and what do you do
Paul: I founded Kerboo in 2012 with two business partners. We are a SaaS business that allows brands and marketing agencies to understand the links that point to their website better. We help people improve their link profiles for SEO and other marketing reasons. As of today we have 7 staff (all in Leeds apart from me!), we have analysed over 10.5 Billion links and maintain a data centre with just under 430 servers in. Our clients include people like Airbnb, Uber, HSBC, Moneysupermarket and many more.
Society1: What’s your story?
Paul: I have been making my living online for over 15 years, originally as a web designer and then a professional spammer (sadly that’s true) and then through a link building business (we had 200 offshore staff in India and Bangladesh) to eventually found Kerboo and start the process of cleaning up all the spam links I’d made in the first place.
Society1: What inspires / drives you?
Paul: I like building things, I love the fact that we live in a time where having a laptop, wifi an idea and a work ethic is all you need to chase your dreams.
Society1: What are you working on at the moment?
Paul: We are relaunching Kerboo in the autumn as a new product called Calq and I am working on starting two new businesses: –
Offpage.co.uk which is a link building agency
OpportunityHive which is an influencer marketing and content discovery platform, we aim to index some 50Million pieces of content within our first year with this one.
Society1: What’s the big Dream?
Paul: Sell one of the businesses and move to San Diego, my favourite place on earth.
Society1: Why did you choose to become a member at Society1?
Paul: As I am the only staff member on this side of the Pennines (head office is located in Leeds where my business partner and CTO live) I was renting a lonely shared office near the Docks and so S1 seemed like a much better place to work!
Now to the real you.......
Society1: Are you a hunter or a gatherer?
Society1: What’s in your packed lunch?
Paul: I’m a great fan of home made Sushi.
Society1: How do you like to relax?
Paul: Netflix to end the day and spending time with my 16 year old daughter at the football (sadly I am a hereditary Evertonian as is she now).
Society1: If you were to choose a super power, what would you choose?
Paul: Anything where I don’t have to wear a cape, nobody wants to see that.
Society1: Beach holiday / City Break?
Paul: City break.
Society1: Money or kudos?
Paul: Neither, happy customers…
Society1: Are you a bathroom singer
Paul: God no.
Society1: If you were an animal what would you be, what animal most represent you?
Paul: I have no idea, something that breaks things whilst trying to work them out.
Society1: Who’s your inspiration?
Paul: I know this is a cliché but I am a very close follower of Elon Musk. Why schools aren’t teaching that following him is the way to approach life is beyond me. He went from starting a business online to plans to send humans to Mars, whats not inspirational about that?
Society1: If you want to treat yourself, what do you do / have / buy?
Paul: Nice meal or night out with friends.
Society1: You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What colour would you be and why?
Paul: Blue, there is only one colour for an Evertonian!
Thank you Paul for choosing Society1, I hope it is more interesting than the old office on your own! We love having you here and thank you for sharing about you and Kerboo.
